How to make a great espresso with a pod machine

A pod machine makes it easy, but a few habits make every cup better. Here are six that work with any ESE machine, including a lever machine like the Clio.
Six habits for a better cup
- Warm up the machine and the cup. A cold cup cools the espresso in seconds.
- Use fresh, clean water and change it often.
- Place the pod flat and centered. A crooked pod lets water run around it.
- Use one pod for one cup. A pod holds a single dose and should not be reused.
- Do not wait. Drink the espresso right away, while the crema is thick.
- Keep the pod holder and the drip tray clean.
A typical espresso
A classic espresso is a short drink, around 25 to 30 ml, brewed in about 25 seconds. If your cup runs much faster or slower, check that the pod is centered and that the machine is clean.
With a lever machine
On the Clio, lift the lever, drop in a pod, lower the lever and press the switch. The espresso falls into the cup in a few seconds.
Water first, then coffee. In Naples a glass of water comes with the espresso, to clear the palate.
Try the blends of NaplesOro Blend, Miscela Nera and Blu Mediterranea, in ESE 44 mm pods.
